Can You Stand The Pain?

Can You Stand The Pain?

Although, it was trending on Facebook it had to be inherently false!

Right?

I was a cynic . . . a pessimist!

“They can’t put anything on the internet that isn’t true . . . ” at least that’s what the French Model on the hilarious State Farm TV commercial implied!

Nevertheless, I hightailed it home and raced to turn on Sports Center.

I fancied myself as the quintessential (All American Athlete.)

Playing stick ball, I’d smash 300-foot line drives, dodge oncoming traffic; then tag the fire hydrant for an inside the neighborhood home run 🙂

I’d play tackle football on concrete since grass playing surfaces weren’t a luxury readily available in The South Bronx! I’d score touchdown after touchdown ( no helmet or pads needed ) and return home with hardly a scratch.

I thought of myself as a (never say quit) tough guy!

. . . but for the life of me, I couldn’t wrap my mind around the breaking news skirting across ESPN’s ticker.

It read “39 year-old who suffers from a rare form of Muscular

Dystrophy jubilantly crosses finish line of the 119th Boston Marathon,

(20 Hours) after starting the race!”

20 Hours . . . Who does that? And why?

I couldn’t phantom how anyone who endured excruciating pain just getting out of bed in the morning, could possibly possess the stick-toitiveness to complete a 26.2-mile grueling running event!

For Maickel Melamed, it was simply a mind over matter thing!!!

It didn’t matter . . .

That doctor’s … said he’d wouldn’t live more than 7 days after being born with his umbilical cord wrapped around his windpipe!

It didn’t matter . . . that he had to be flown from his home in Caracas, Venezuela, to

Boston Children Hospital; for a surgery that if wildly successful; only promised him a 20% chance of ever walking.

It didn’t matter . . .

That on day one of his training for the Boston Marathon Maickel only lasted 500 meters. The equivalent of me walking from my house to my mailbox 15 times.

It didn’t matter . . .

That the lightning strikes and torrential rains didn’t arrive until after the other 30,000 runners were comfortably in their hotel suites sipping on Lattes. Unfortunately, the heavens opened up on Maickel leaving every inch of his ailing body absolutely soaked.

It didn’t matter . . .

That the average 80-year-old male race participant finished the race

in just under 5 hours; or 15 hours faster than him.

It didn’t matter . . .

That at times during the race, he’d take 6 steps forward, then collapse into the arms of a nearby teammate. Incredibly, he’d get back up 10 seconds later and continue pressing on. This pattern of dogged determination continued on for nearly 5 hours.

He was relentless in his pursuit.

I imagined when Maickel started the race, he told himself . . . the only thing blocking him from living out his destiny; would be his ability to outlast the pain, push past humiliation and leap frog any obstacle blocking his path.

What’s blocking your path today? Many, WannaPreneurs claim they want financial freedom and boatloads of cash, but their nothing like Mike. At the first sign of adversity . . . they’re back peddling, pointing a finger at “The Man” and crying woe is me!

I submit, if you’re seeking the red carpet treatment from your banker in lieu of always having your request red flagged, 3 actions are required.

1.) You’ve got to be willing to fight like hell and battle credit issues head on.

2.) Be willing to leap frog negative bankers; and naysayers who are blocking your view of the finish line.

3.) During rough cloudy days . . . (Have a WHY) that pushes you onward and upward when there doesn’t appear to be any light at the end of the tunnel.

Maickel’s, (WHY) was his burning desire to salute the City of Boston for gifting him with life-saving surgery; that enabled him to walk when hundreds of “medical experts” said he’d never step a day in his life.

Is your (WHY) big enough to push you past an UNFAIR or PAINFUL denial?

If not, I invite you to Dig Deeper, RUN with Urgency, and Discover a

WHY that will elevate you to a life you’ve only imagined!
